The issue of abortion has been permeating our society more and more each year. No matter where you stand on the topic there is no denying that many people feel strongly one way or the other. At the center of much debate regarding this issue is Planned Parenthood. There seem to be many people who are under the impression that abortions are just a small part of what Planned Parenthood is all about. The following information shows otherwise.
According to it’s 2016-2017 annual report, in 2016 alone, the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) performed 321,384 abortions. The company typically performs between 320,000-334,000 abortions per year. This average has been maintained despite an overall drop in nationwide abortion totals.
It may come as a surprise to learn that while Planned Parenthood’s abortion totals have maintained their average, contraceptive services have dropped 30% since 2009. Breast exams and pap tests have plummeted 64% and prenatal services have taken an 81% nosedive in recent years. Overall, a 15% drop in total services has been reported by Planned Parenthood.
Even more shocking might be the fact that abortion accounts for 97% of Planned Parenthood’s three pregnancy related services (abortion, adoption referral, prenatal services). They perform 83 abortions for every 1 adoption referral, which means they are 41 times more likely to perform an abortion than to refer for adoption. The company reported a revenue of $1.46 billion in 2017, which is an increase of 39% since the 2009 fiscal year and a gain of $100 million over 2016. This means they are making more money while providing fewer services.
Something else of note is that Planned Parenthood consistently stands in the way of pro-life legislation. No matter what stage of pregnancy the legislation deals with, PPFA is there to challenge it.
A major drop in everything but abortion services, coupled with an increase in profits, shows that PPFA does rely heavily on abortion. The next time you come across a person that insists abortion isn’t a major part of Planned Parenthood, refer them to this post and hope that their eyes may be opened.
