Oftentimes, on social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Gab, and Parler, I see pro-life enthusiasts expressing hate and ill-wishes for abortion workers. It seems that these people identify those involved with the abortion industry as targets for their indignation. This concept is easy for me to understand because I often look for targets to lash out at when I am feeling outraged as well. I have spent most of my time as a Christian pro-life advocate viewing abortion workers as vile, disgusting people without a conscience. There have even been times when I felt genuine hate toward them, especially the current president of Planned Parenthood, Dr. Leana Wen. Though I despise what she does for a living, advocating for the deaths of millions of helpless humans, and I do not consider her a true doctor, she supports the taking of life instead of the preservation of it, I should not hate her. Instead of hating, or lashing out against the abortion workers and perpetuators we should be attacking their sins with prayer.
We humans are fallen and sinful by our very nature. We can be manipulated, coerced, influenced, and outright ignorant. Many workers in the abortion industry truly believe they are doing the right thing. They believe there is a war on women’s rights and that they are on the frontlines.
Spewing hateful rhetoric and telling them how evil they are will only serve to further ensconce them in that belief. Many of them like to identify with the Women’s Suffrage movement. They imagine that they are furthering the cause. After all, famous Suffragists, such as Lucy Burns, were also harassed and verbally and physically abused. Believing this as strongly as many of them do, it is easy to see how they learn to ignore self-evident truths, such as life starting at conception.
It is my belief, that one reason there are numerous workers in the abortion industry who trust they are fighting for the cause of women’s rights, is because that is what abortion providers such as Planned Parenthood want them to believe. That is why for many years Planned Parenthood helped perpetuate misinformation in regard to the services they provided. The company claimed that abortion was not their primary cash-cow, all the while, behind closed doors, they were figuring out ways to increase the number of abortions. Another lie was that they provided ultrasounds and mammograms at every clinic. The truth is that Planned Parenthood referred mammogram patients to other medical facilities and told their nurses not to show women their ultrasounds. Claiming to provide mammograms supports their façade that they are a true women’s health facility. Denying women the opportunity to see their ultrasounds helps maintain a higher abortion rate, as when women see their babies and hear their heartbeats they are more likely to change their minds about getting an abortion. Since the afore mentioned lies were perpetuated for so long, and so ardently, many women have been fooled into believing that Planned Parenthood and their ilk have the best interests of women at heart.
How can we consider the individual workers, or even abortion workers as a collective, our enemies if they have been manipulated and coerced into believing what they do? How can we call them evil when hateful rhetoric from some pro-life folks helps to reaffirm the abortion worker’s beliefs? We can’t. The truth of the matter is that they are human and they have given in to various influences around and within them. We all do the same thing in different areas. Our real enemy is sin. It is sin that tempts us to forget what we know to be true, or to ignore truth in pursuit of personal aspirations. Sin is what plays the biggest role in the taking of innocent life. Lies, arrogance, manipulation, conceit, hate, selfishness, fear, callousness, worry…all of these things play a role in abortion, and all of these things are influenced by sin.
