Ilhan Omar Refuses To Denounce Terrorist Recruitment In Her Minnesota District

Since this all came to light back in February, this is old news, but the mainstream media refused to cover it adequately and this information is at risk of being brushed aside. So, for that purpose, as well as presenting some new thoughts and concepts regarding it, I have chosen to cover it.

Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, which is represented by Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, was discovered to be the terrorist recruitment capital of America back in February of 2019. FBI statistics show that in the last 12 years at least 45 Somali Americans from that district have joined or attempted to join terrorist organizations such as al-Shabab or ISIS. As of 2018 as many as a dozen more have been suspected of attempting to join a terrorist organization. This is a far higher rate than other Somali communities in America. Fox News was among the first to report this finding, you can read their article here.

Broadcast journalist Nick Ballasy asked Rep. Omar about the FBI report in a video posted to YouTube on 6/10/19. The following is a transcript of the exchange, or lack thereof:

Nick Ballasy: “I just wanted to ask you a quick question about the FBI saying that your district has the highest rate of terrorist recruitment, your specific district. What steps are you taking to deter extremism and recruitment by terrorist organizations going on in your district?”

Rep. Ilhan Omar: “I have not seen that report.”

Nick Ballasy: “Yes, they are FBI stats, but as a general rule what steps are you taking, what is your message to people who may want to join one of those groups within your district?”

Rep. Ilhan Omar: (No answer, just walks away)

Her refusal to condemn terrorist recruitment in her district, or to address it in the least, comes as a shock to many. However, she has a history of making light of terrorist acts. In March of 2019, at a private fundraiser for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Rep. Omar had this to say, “CAIR was founded after 9/11, because they recognize that some people did something, and then all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties.” Not only is there no evidence to support her assertion that Islamic peoples were losing their civil liberties, but she relegated the significance of 9/11 to “some people did something.” That is not a respectful way to reference a terrorist attack that led to the deaths of 2,977 innocent Americans. Especially when the terrorists who planned and executed the attack did so in the name of Islam, the very religion Omar practices.

In a 2013 interview aired on Twin Cities PBS, Ahmed Tharwat asked Ilhan Omar, an activist at that time, “When are we gonna decide or realize that terrorism is a reaction? It’s an ideology, it’s a means of things, it’s not an entity, it’s not a place, people. It’s a reaction to a situation.”

Omar responded with, “Yes, what you’re insinuating is what nobody wants to face. Nobody wants to face how the actions of the other people that are involved in the world have contributed to the rise of the radicalization and the rise of terrorist acts.”

She continued on to say, “Usually most people want to not look internal and see what their actions that makes another react. For us, it’s always ‘I must have not done anything. Why is it happening to me?’ Nobody wants to take accountability of how these are byproducts of the actions of our involvement in other people’s affairs.”

Tharwat then said, “Most of the people who commit these kinds of heinous violence are done by people unelected that are just fringe of the societies … but the violence done by the West is done by the people that are elected,”

To this, Ilhan Omar claimed that violence by the West was “legitimized.”

The answer she gave places blame for terrorist attacks on people and governments in general, merely for being involved with each other. She then reinforces the claim that elected officials in the West (America, for example) perpetuate terrorist attacks across the globe, while other terror attacks are committed by “unelected” people on the “fringe of societies.” Her support for this claim shows her willingness to downplay terrorist attacks employed by Islamic terrorist groups such as Al-Qaeda, ISIS, al-Shabab, and The Muslim Brotherhood. The claim itself is also erroneous in it’s assertion that only people on the fringe of Muslim societies perpetuate these attacks when the government of Iran is a known sponsor of terrorism.

Why would Ilhan Omar refuse to denounce the recruitment of terrorists in her district? Why would she downplay terrorist attacks perpetrated by members of her own religion? Without her coming forward and personally, explicitly, giving a reason, all we can do is offer theories. Although, one possible explanation that should not be overlooked can be found in the holy book of Islam. The Quran clearly states that Muslims should fight against all peoples who do not practice Islam. The book even goes as far as to say that Muslims are to “slay the Pagans wherever ye find them…” I know that not every Muslim views these words the same way. However, these words have to be part of the discussion concerning Ilhan Omar’s reluctance to denounce terrorist recruitment in her district and her consistent downplaying of terrorist attacks by Muslims.

“And fight them until Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism) is no more, and religion be only for Allah. But if they desist, then let there be no hostility except against wrong-doers.” – Quran 2:193

“Say to those who have disbelieved, if they cease their past will be forgiven… And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism) and the religion will all be for Allah Alone. But if they cease (worshipping others besides Allah), then certainly, Allah is All-Seer of what they do.” – Quran 8:38-39

“Are they seeking a religion other than Allah’s, when every soul in the heavens and the earth has submitted to Him, willingly or by compulsion?” – Quran 3:83

“But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans (those who do not worship Allah) wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem; but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practice regular charity, then open the way for them…” – Quran 9:5

“Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.” – Quran 9:29

After reading the above passages from the Quran, it can be understood how at least a portion of Muslims come to believe using violence on unbelievers is a good and righteous thing. I know we Americans like to bury our heads in the sand and pretend as though everything is just fine or that something is none of our business or that a particular thing could never happen here. That is part of the reason we didn’t get involved in World War II until our own Pearl Harbor was bombed. Yet, ignoring the truth, or at least the possibility of truth, will not preserve our freedoms. Therefore we must keep an open mind, and a watchful eye, when our elected representatives consistently refuse to denounce acts of evil or belittle the tragic results of those evil acts.
